Johnson County is located in central Indiana immediately south of Indianapolis on I-65. The excellent interstate highway system gives Johnson County direct and quick access to the rest of the country.

Johnson County offers the benefits of easy access to a number of interstate highways without the congestion of the city traffic of Indianapolis. Truck and passenger traffic in and out of Johnson County can utilize I-465 to I-70, I-74 and I-69 via I-65 which crosses the county.

The county also has excellent secondary access via the numerous State Routes which cross the county.

Rail

Indiana has 4,255 railroad route miles, of which 91 percent are operated by Class I railroads, principally CSX Transportation, Inc. (CSXT) and Norfolk Southern (NS). The remaining miles are operated by 37 regional, local, and switching & terminal railroads.

Short line railroads in Indiana are a vital element of the state's rail network, serving 62 counties, 15 of which are served only by short lines. Johnson County is one of these counties which is served by short line railroads. Bargersville, Franklin, Greenwood, Whiteland and Edinburgh in Johnson County are all served by either Indiana Rail Road or Louisville Indiana Rail Company with connections to the major north-south, and east west rail lines.

In October 2000, the U.S. Department of Transportation designated the Louisville Indiana Rail Company (LIRC) alignment as a high-speed rail corridor. Between Indianapolis and Edinburg, IN, the LIRC is designated by the Department of Defense as an element of the Strategic Rail Corridor Network (STRACNET).

Air Transport

Johnson County is served by 2 airports within the county, Franklin Flying Field and
Greenwood Municipal Airport (click to view photo) in addition to the nearby Indianapolis International Airport.

Franklin Flying Field serves Franklin and Johnson County and is owned by Marguerite Mullendore. The paved runway extends for 2400 feet. The facility is at an elevation of 740 feet at a distance of about 3 miles from Franklin.

Greenwood Municipal Airport serves Indianapolis and Johnson County and is owned by Greenwood Boac. The paved runway extends for 4300 feet. The facility is at an elevation of 822 feet at a distance of about 3 miles from Indianapolis.

The Louisville Indiana Rail and I-65 are a direct route to the Clark Maritime Center in Jeffersonville, Indiana - 90 miles / 144.84 kilometers. Clark is a member of the Ports of Indiana system.

Utilities in Johnson County, Indiana

Electricity

Edinburgh and Bargersville are members of the Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA), a state-wide joint action agency, offering a 914MW power system that delivers low cost, reliable power to all its customers.

Franklin, Greenwood and most of Johnson County utilize Cinergy / PSI and Johnson County REMC.

Water / Sewage
